Type of waste

Girona area: there are containers in most of the ports where larger ítems can be deposited; they also have specific points for nets. Barcelona area: currently, there are containers located in the fishery area of the pots in which fishery vessels can deposit their gear (including nets); regarding aquaculture litter, there have been some issues especially with abandoned items; those items (mostly floats, plastic items and nets) have been managed by the regional authority together with authorized waste management companies (nevertheless, this type of litter is usually managed by the aquaculture farmers). Tarragona: aquaculture companies located in Tarragona usually manage their own waste together (holding a contractual agreement with external waste management companies); nevertheless, there are waste disposal and recyling points in the ports which include, among other types, containers for nets and any kind of gear from fishery activities. Moreover, The Catalan Waste Management institution holds a project focused on upcycling nets. This project is developed together with the national, regional port authorities, fishermen’s guilds and private companies: the involved Catalan ports have specific containers for nets that have reached the end of life. Those nets are managed by a Catalan company, which collects them and extracts the plastic fragments that are in a good status. Afterwards, they send them to a Basque company which is specialized in recycling and upcycling processes.
