Professional collection systems are needed: cleaning vessels could be a joint venture of several parties based on shared ownership, shared returns and risks, and shared governance. Such a joint venture will enable parties to gain scale efficiencies by combining assets and operations; sharing risk for major investments and to access skills and capabilities.

Related Barriers:

  • The collection and recovery of lost gear is difficult due to environmental conditions; the ocean is very vast and the waves and wind spread the litter fast so it is economically challenging to locate lost items and then send a vessel to collect them.

  • There is a lack of efficient systems and facilities for collecting, storing and processing of used gear and equipment.
