Support Measures
Financial support
Enhance compliance with MARPOL and EU Control Regulation through incentives and/or facilitation for farmers and other
stakeholders to not abandon or discard gear .
Install a cost recovery system (insurance fund) for aquaculture farmers to ensure that they remain motivated and are
incentivised when bringing gear and ALDFG back to shore and hand it over to appropriate collection facilities.
Mitigate the price impact on aquaculture gear and materials composed of more durable materials instead of single use
plastic by a gradual shift in the production of materials by gear producers to facilitate the adaptation of the
aquaculture farmer.
In Spain, synchronize the license renewals that shellfish farmers need from the approving authority and from the Port
Authority
Policy makers should provide the financial and organizational support needed to establish a specific aquaculture EPR
system.
Governments should give financial support if farmers use durable materials (e.g. lower VAT) or implement this in more
stringent regulations.
Economic incentives should be introduced for offshore workers (fishermen, wind farmers, etc.) to collect and sort waste
(on board, offshore).
Introduction of incentives to use recycled plastics as much as possible (but: of sufficient quality)
