Job profiles and positions similar to the Galician "redeiras" (Spain) could be brought to the aquaculture life cycle and included as part of the corporate social responsibility of the aquaculture farmers and/or the gear producers.

The "redeiras" are the Galician (Spain) professionals who are traditionally dedicated to the manufacture, repair and maintenance of fishing gear and tackle. The "redeiras" or "redeiros" job profile has a long tradition in Spain, developed since the last century. The redeira's and redeiro's habilities have adapted to the different needs of boats and to the changing types of fishing gear through all these years.

  • The prevention of marine litter should be the base of the circular economy. Currently, gear producers are not considerably involved or interested in this type of approach, making sustainable design, research on alternative materials, etc, not their priority. (This situation will have to change once the Directive EU 2019/904 on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment is applied by all European countries).

  • There is a lack of awareness at all levels of the aquaculture life cycle regarding the prevention of non-organic marine litter.
